Moss and roof drainage

Roof Moss in Oldham: When Is It Actually a Problem?

Moss on its own does not mean a roof needs replacing. The practical question is what it is doing to drainage and the covering.

Overflowing gutter and downpipe soaking the wall beneath.
A gutter or downpipe fault can mimic a roof leak very convincingly.

Where moss causes trouble

Thick growth can block valleys and gutters. It can also hold moisture around tile edges and make inspection harder. On some interlocking tiles, heavy build-up can interfere with water paths.

Cleaning can cause damage

Aggressive pressure washing is not something I would use casually on an older roof. It can damage surfaces, force water under laps and turn a moss problem into a roof problem.

Look at what is underneath

If tiles are sound and drainage is clear, a light covering may be more appearance than defect. If pieces are lifting or channels are blocked, removal becomes more useful.

Gutters after cleaning

Any roof cleaning should include clearing the debris it sends down. Otherwise the first heavy shower moves the problem straight into the gutters and outlets.
