Note when the problem happens

Does it leak in every shower or only in prolonged rain? Did it start after wind? Is the stain growing or just old discolouration? Those details help narrow the fault.

Take photographs safely

Photograph the internal stain and any visible external damage from ground level. A wide shot and a closer shot are usually enough. There is no benefit in climbing a ladder just to get a better phone picture.

Know what you are asking for

If you want a repair rather than a general roof overhaul, say so. A good roofer can still tell you if they find something more serious, but the starting brief should be clear.

Questions worth asking

  • What do you think is causing the leak?
  • What exactly will you replace or refix?
  • Does the price include access and waste?
  • If hidden damage is found, how will extra work be agreed?

You do not need a long interrogation. You just need enough detail to understand what you are paying for.
