After rough weather

Storm Damage to Roofs in Oldham

After a rough night the temptation is to look for something dramatic. Often the damage is one lifted ridge, a slipped slate or a small section of flashing.

Wind damage and patchy earlier repairs can leave a tiled roof vulnerable.

Start from the ground

Look for fresh gaps, pieces in the garden, ridge tiles sitting out of line and lead edges that have lifted. Binoculars are useful. Climbing a wet roof is not.

Photograph what you can see

A few clear photos help when you speak to a roofer and may also be useful if insurance becomes relevant. Include wider shots so the location of the damage is obvious.

Water ingress after the wind

If rain follows the wind, check the loft safely if you can. A torch can show wet rafters or drips before staining reaches the ceiling. Do not touch wet electrics.

Loose material needs attention

Anything that could fall onto a path, neighbour’s property or pavement is more urgent than a hidden leak. Explain that clearly when arranging help.
